Getting to and from Shanghai’s airports

Shanghai has one of the most complete airport transport networks in the world. Between Shanghai Metro, the maglev, the Airport Link Line, airport coaches, taxis and car hire, both airports are well connected to the city centre and to each other.

Metro Line 2

Line 2 is the main artery of the airport network. It runs from Pudong International Airport through Longyang Road, Lujiazui financial district, East Nanjing Road, People’s Square and on to Hongqiao International Airport. Fares vary from 3 to 10 CNY depending on the number of stations travelled, and the full Pudong to Hongqiao journey takes around 90 minutes.

Maglev

The Shanghai Maglev Train links Pudong Airport with Longyang Road metro station, where you can change to Lines 2, 7 and 16. The 30 km run takes less than eight minutes, making it the fastest option into the city from Pudong.

Airport Link Line

The Shanghai Suburban Railway Airport Link Line, opened in December 2024, links Pudong Airport Terminal 1 and 2 station with Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 and the Hongqiao rail hub. It is the most convenient way to move between the two airports.

Airport buses

Eight airport bus lines serve Pudong, providing rapid links to destinations across Shanghai. From Hongqiao, coach services run from the Hongqiao Hub East Transport Center on Level 3 of Terminal 2, typically between 05:30 and 23:00, with night routes from 23:00 to 05:00. Fares are typically 2 to 6 CNY, rising to 10 CNY for Puxi and 16 CNY for Pudong on the night service to Lujiazui.

Taxis and car hire

Metered taxis wait at the arrivals hall of every terminal, and airport ranks are clearly marked. A taxi between the two airports costs roughly 200 to 280 CNY and takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Rental car desks are located in the terminals, and international booking platforms serve both airports.

Allow at least 3 hours for a connection between PVG and SHA. The two airports are 57 km apart and require a landside journey, including re-checking bags and clearing security again.
